Heritage Sites in Baltimore, Maryland
There are a few sites of interest that should not be missed when touring the Maryland city of Baltimore. Two of those are the Library of Maryland History and the Museum of the Maryland Historical Society. One of the items in the Library museum is the original hand written copy of the “Star Spangled Banner”. The largest collection of American silver is located here, as well as the largest collection of decorative arts in the United States. The city has a long history of seagoing and maritime adventures, and this is illustrated in the Baltimore Maritime Museum. The museum is located on Pier 3, one of the most popular of the displays is the U.S.S. Torsk, the WWII submarine which sank the final British warship.
If you are looking to take in a bit of art, Baltimore is the place to be as two of the country’s most prestigious art museums are located within walking distance of each other. In downtown, close to many a fine Baltimore restaurant, and the the Homewood Campus of Johns Hopkins University, is the Baltimore Museum of Art. There are more than one hundred twenty thousand pieces of work housed in the museum’s permanent collection, as well as the famous Cone Collection. This collection includes works by Cezanne, Picasso and Matisse. Various wings of the museum are dedicated to the artwork of Oceania, Asia and Africa. An incredibly artistic modern wing has recently been opened that exhibits famous drawings by the past masters. Also located on Charles Street is the Walters Art Gallery. This facility too, has a great collection which includes works covering five thousand years of the history of artists and their masterpieces. It is difficult to take in all that this city has to offer on a brief visit, but these are just a few of the sites that you should definitely work into your travel plans while in Baltimore, Maryland.
