Entertaining for a Singapore Wedding Made Easy

December 23rd, 2009

The entertainment you choose for your Singapore wedding is all-important and will guarantee that your guests will remember your precious event for years to come. Naturally, it will be difficult to cater to every one’s tastes, plus, there’s only so much you can do to please all your guests, and adding to that, keeping in mind all the different ages of your wedding guests, especially if there are going to be children at your wedding party.

Children can become bored if the entertainments isn’t to their liking and no ones wants to deal with bored children. This will become an annoyance and an inconvenience to your wedding guests and the children and their parents alike. Children will often provide a nice distraction before the alcohol has started flowing, but until then it’s wise to go the extra mile so the children and their parents can both enjoy themselves. If the children haven’t been taken into account when it comes to picking the best wedding entertainment Singapore can amply provide, then it will only create stress on parents as their children will pester, demand attention, draining them to no end and making a miserable time for all.

It will be to your best interest to set aside a table just for the children, letting them all sit together, this way, they will make new friends and create their own entertainment. You might consider providing props for the children as well, let’s say a paper tablecloth with which they can color, draw or doodle on to their heart’s content. Believe it or not, children will relish the act of marking up a table cloth. Perhaps, if you have time, set-up a treasure hunt. Not only will the parents be pleased, but the wedding party will not be interrupted by bored and pouting children.

If you’ve chosen to have a DJ as the wedding entertainment, make sure the DJ has a good collection of oldies, contemporary and fun participatory music, this will ensure that there will be a continuous mix of music to keep every generation on their feet dancing.

There are a myriad of ways to entertain your wedding guests, like a chocolate fountain, a caricaturist or even a magician. No matter what you choose, always ask yourself ‘will this entertain all my guests?’ and you can’t go wrong.

Heritage Sites in Baltimore, Maryland

December 14th, 2009

There are a few sites of interest that should not be missed when touring the Maryland city of Baltimore.  Two of those are the Library of Maryland History and the Museum of the Maryland Historical Society.  One of the items in the Library museum is the original hand written copy of the “Star Spangled Banner”.  The largest collection of American silver is located here, as well as the largest collection of decorative arts in the United States.   The city has a long history of seagoing and maritime adventures, and this is illustrated in the Baltimore Maritime Museum.  The museum is located on Pier 3, one of the most popular of the displays is the U.S.S. Torsk, the WWII submarine which sank the final British warship.

If you are looking to take in a bit of art, Baltimore is the place to be as two of the country’s most prestigious art museums are located within walking distance of each other.  In downtown, close to many a fine Baltimore restaurant, and the the Homewood Campus of Johns Hopkins University,  is the Baltimore Museum of Art.  There are more than one hundred twenty thousand pieces of work housed in the museum’s permanent collection, as well as the famous Cone Collection. This collection includes works by Cezanne, Picasso and Matisse.  Various wings of the museum are dedicated to the artwork of Oceania, Asia and Africa.  An incredibly artistic modern wing has recently been opened that exhibits famous drawings by the past masters.  Also located on Charles Street is the Walters Art Gallery.  This facility too, has a great collection which includes works covering five thousand years of the history of artists and their masterpieces.  It is difficult to take in all that this city has to offer on a brief visit, but these are just a few of the sites that you should definitely work into your travel plans while in Baltimore, Maryland.

A Sculpture’s Wood Burning Stove

December 13th, 2009

Many years ago I visited a very good friend in Bozeman, Montana. He was an older man, living with his wife in his home town, but he had spent most of his earlier adult life living in Amsterdam, and becoming one of the most well known sculptors of our time.  When Floyd picked me up from airport, I really did not know what to expect, he was a severely cranky and temperamental artist, and add to that, he had just quit smoking.  I was very much surprised when I walked into his house for the first time.  It was a modern style farm house…huge, incredible studio in the back. The one element that did not seem to fit, was the old fashioned, cast iron wood burning stove in the middle of the living room.

Even though it was April, the town had experienced and ice storm the night before, so it was very cold, especially to me coming from the springtime temperatures in Phoenix, Arizona.  When we walked in, Floyd’s wife had loaded up the stove, and the warmth was nothing like I had experienced before.  In Phoenix, there are not many homes that are built with fireplaces, and I could not believe how, not only was it really warm, but the cozy feel just put me right at home.  The heat that was provided was an all around kind of heat, nothing like the forced air heat that can zap any humidity out of the room, causing it sometimes to be hard to breath.

The fire, just felt better.  People have been heating their houses for centuries, with these wood burning stoves and fireplaces.  They not only are an effective way to heat your home, but they add an ambiance that is just not there without it.  Having family and friends over for the holidays, well, now that I have experienced the warmth of the stove, having everyone sitting around the fireplace and chatting, just signifies that the season is here and filled with cheer.  Stories are told and memories are made.  Once I was in his environment, and we were talking about art in front of the fire, Floyd turned out to be not so cranky after all.

Carolina Bays

December 8th, 2009

Michael had heard about Southern manners, Southern charm and Southern gentility, however he had really never given it much thought. However, when his fiancée Daisy insisted that they travel to South Carolina to meet some of her extended family, he had no idea of what he was actually in for. He had lived his entire life in Minnesota, and while they people there were friendly enough, he was about to understand the meaning of the previously mentioned descriptive phrases.

Daisy’s family lived in a small town just outside of Charleston. The couple was welcomed with warm smiles, hugs and a freshly backed peach cobbler, which was hands down the best cobbler he had ever had in his life. Though to be fair he couldn’t remember the last time he actually had any cobbler. Daisy told him that one of the secrets was in pouring a bit of whole sweet cream over the top of each portion. Michael didn’t care so much what the secret was, he just wanted seconds. Later that afternoon Michael suggested they check into their room in one of the hotels Carolina but Daisy’s aunt insisted that they cancel their reservations and stay with them. If the food was going to be as delicious as that cobbler, Michael would have no problem staying there and graciously accepted the offer.

The following afternoon the couple was taken on a tour of some of the Carolina bays, which Michael had never heard about before. On the way Daisy kidded him that this trip was full of first times for him. They went to a large marshy area and after Michael had wandered out a bit Daisy’s relatives warmed him about the alligators. They laughed harder than they ever had before as he tripped while racing back to the car. So, now Michael was aware not only of Southern manners, he was intimately familiar with Southern humor. It was now his intent to demonstrate Minnesotans sense of justice and fair play.
