Dubai Folk Folks
November 30th, 2009
Dubai is a lot of fascinating places in one location, and it’s small wonder that it’s one of the hottest spots in the world for travelers looking for beaches, excellent shopping, or a perfect all-night party. This makes it a logical magnet for the world’s celebrity culture, looking to escape from the limelight, but just a little bit. It’s certainly possible to get away from the hassles of the world while you’re here, but it’s just as likely to that you’ll find a fantastic social scene, where people go to create something entirely new. There is a long and fascinating culture here already, of course, but initiatives to make it into a major creative center for the world, to supplement its reputation as a major financial center, has invited a number of new cultures. It’s all extraordinarily interesting, and it happens in sumptuous surroundings, especially in the Dubai, UAE luxury hotels.
Dubai offers some of the most splendid hospitality in the world, and these hotels are the cream of this spectacular crop, so you can be sure that you’ll enjoy your time here, with an elegant location to return to at the end of every day. There are all sorts of wonderful attractions in the daylight, and at night, there’s another layer of cultures that get revealed. One of these interesting, and somewhat new, cultures in Dubai is the current folk music scene. With players like Jenniver Gove, Holly Major, and Axel Jacob, it might be small, but it’s absolutely happening. It’s a great place for a folk scene to pop up. The environment is terribly inspiring, between the contradiction of the desert and the beach, and the excellent culture that supports new innovations and ventures.
It’s also a very electric atmosphere, so that those young and ambitious musicians looking to make something happen can find resources and spaces to play here. This is not to say that it’s easy. Jacob has been playing for the better part of 15 years before releasing his first EP. It is truly splendid. The influence of Leonard Cohen and Bob Dylan is certainly here, and the soft and elegant voice moves with the geographies of angst in a wonderfully restrained way. As long as there is longing, there needs to be songs to accompany it, and the future is in good hands here.
University of Dayton
November 25th, 2009
The University of Dayton was Holly’s first choice of schools. She had visited the campus once five years ago when her cousin Troy was a student there. Holly and her brother Michael and driven out to visit Troy for the weekend. Michael and Troy were close and her brother let Holly tag along even though he may have preferred a weekend with just the two guys. Be that as it may, Holly did accompany her brother on that trip enjoyed her time in Dayton. She also remembers loving the campus and thought that it was beautiful. She planned on joining their large academic department of the College of Arts and Sciences. She planned to be a physics major though she also planned to go to graduate school where she would hone her focus into astronomy. She had no idea at that point where she would go for her graduate studies.
Holly’s parents supported her decision to study at Dayton and the family planned a trip to visit and tour the campus. They made their reservations in one of the Dayton hotels near the campus drove out to visit the university and the city in which it was located. The neighborhood around the campus was pretty similar to how Holly remembered it though there were definitely some new businesses. Just arriving in the city gave her a great feeling and though she had only been there once before it was almost like she was coming home. She wondered about this connection and how some people felt that intrinsic love and connection to certain places. She drew no conclusions but thought perhaps after she had finished her degree she might have some idea as to why this occurred. Holly remembered exactly where her primary building was located and took her parents directly to it. They thought the campus was beautiful and it seemed like a great place for their daughter to study. Holly couldn’t have agreed more.
Hot Tubs and Waking to the Present
November 24th, 2009
Becoming tuned into the present moment is a very simple thing, but the distractions of the waking world make it infinitely complex, and sometimes it seems infinitely far away. Taking a simple moment to take a few deep breaths is one great method for waking up to the present. There are some who will say that it is part of the complicated nature of modern life, that our lives have become filled with new problems, and new technologies to always distract us from the things that are really important. But looking at the teachings of ancient Eastern philosophies can reveal that this is not a modern problem at all, but perhaps it is one of consciousness in general, and something human beings have had in their psyches since they first started to dream.
A hot tub is perhaps considered by many to be a modern convenience to help with a modern sensibility, but even here, the history of human civilizations will reveal that the idea is very old. So although you can certainly choosehottubsdirect.com to find your perfect personal spa, with their excellent selection and spectacular customer service, in order to solve a modern problem, you’re also entering into a very old tradition. There are many cultures that have seen the benefits of hot water and massage on the human body, and the idea for the spa comes from the hot springs in many areas of the world. Ancient philosophers have thought long and hard about the effects of the hot bath on consciousness, and have remarked on its extraordinary ability to calm a busy mind.
It’s a very pleasant thing to have your worries melt away the moment that your skin hits the water. It’s even more pleasant to know that this only gets better, and the health benefits keep growing the more you use your hot tub. But it’s also an exquisite side effect that this experience can also help you to wake up to the present moment. Being connected to the moment also makes you more aware of the needs of other people, and more attentive in general. Sometimes it’s a long journey to the here and now, but this is one of the best tools we have for making the trip enormously pleasurable.
Seeing the Sunset Twice in Cape Town
November 24th, 2009
I’m finally back in Cape Town proper. The weather was so much better than yesterday. It’s warm and the sky is clear and so blue. There was only a slight breeze and just a small tag of fog as I descended Table Mountain. It was a perfect day to watch the sunset at the top of the mountain. But, the park rangers didn’t go by our schedule. The cable car closed at 4:30pm. That was just a few minutes before us sun-downers got there. I made a mental note about the park rangers being a real bummer, party-poopers, rain on my parade, etc.
So, after taking a few more photos, I hiked it over to Signal Hill and watched the sunset again, alongside 500 other people. Signal Hill had a different view, less mountains in the way of the sun, so that’s why I got to see it twice. Never thought I’d say I saw a sunset twice in one day, but now I can and it’s the truth. I stayed there until I saw Cape Town light up and then the temperature dropped dramatically.
My experience of Cape Town: I found it to be one of those places that you go to with high expectations, and Cape Town rises to those expectation and then throws in a few extra surprises. When I first arrived, I just knew taking the regulars tours wouldn’t cut it, so I went to one of the Cape Town car rentals and got a four-wheel jeep. This place is astoundingly beautiful. No matter where I drove, no matter where I was, every crack, every corner and ever angle brought a new sense of wonder. It also brings about a sense of frustration, because I kept feeling like I was missing out on so much more. But, I realized I couldn’t be every where at one time, so accepted where I was at the moment.
Duluth Superior Symphony Orchestra
November 23rd, 2009
Carol sat looking over the John Blatnik Bridge at the beautiful night skyline of Duluth, Minnesota. He was there for the weekend only to audition for the Duluth Superior Symphony Orchestra. He had played the flute professionally for over ten years and had grown tired of the town he had been living in when a friend told him about the opening with this symphony. Carol wondered what it would be like living in Duluth, a city he had never been to before but was finding beautiful and almost welcoming on this brief trip. He never liked auditions, and part of him scolded him for being there. He thought he should be grateful to have consistent professional work as a musician, but still he couldn’t resist the pull toward something new.
The next morning he stood at the large arcadia door in his comfortable room in one of the hotels Duluth. He warmed up with one of his favorite passages from Mozart’s Magic Flute. He thought about his audition pieces an played through those before returning to some of his favorite works just to keep his mind in a playful mood and not become too serious.
That thought always struck Carol as funny, a serious flutist. It just didn’t seem to fit although in actuality he knew plenty of serious flutists in his lifetime. After the audition Carol went immediately to the Lester Park Trail, which he had read about as a popular hiking path. He made it his practice to always go somewhere peaceful, and with flowing water if possible, after an audition or any stressful meeting to calm his nerves. He refused to think about how it went because he knew he was in an overly critical position and could not objectively look at it. So instead, he sat along the river and played his flute to invisible nymphs.
History of Jaipur India
November 18th, 2009
Jaipur hotels are plentiful in this wonderful India city. When you arrive here you are sure to get some of the best Indian hospitality that they are becoming known for. After a good rest from possible jet lag it will be time to get out and enjoy some of the historical sights. The Hawa Mahal built in 1799 and the Nahargarh Fort built in 1734 are two monuments that are a must see.
Catch a ride to Nahargarh Fort (translated to the Tiger Fort ) it is in the hills only 6 miles North of Jaipur. This fort was built by Maharaja Sawai Jai Singh as is the first of 3 forts. It stands on top of the Aravalis and gives a fantastic view of the city below. This is the fort that offered support to the security of Amer. The main building was done in 1734, however, rulers of the 19th century added their own changes and additions. The rumor is, that there was a prince who used to haunt the construction site during its building, and so it was named after him. The Royal Family would often have lunch near the Madhavendra Bhawan. Which was the part built by Sawai Ram Singh II. Nahargarh Fort makes a wondeful backdrop for the city of Jaipur, especially at night when it is all lit up.
The Hawa Mahal (translated to Palace of Winds ) is another interesting building. This is a mix of Rajputana architecture and Mughal architecture built by Maharaja Sawai Singh in 1799. The face of the building is five stories of 953 cascading windows with ornately decorated lattice work. The picture as a whole looks like a pink honeycomb. The pink sandstone makes it seem as edible as a cake. This palace was built for the women of the royal family. They had to fallow strict rules of cover, known as Purdah, so they would sit in the windows a watch the world go by. This is how the women would participate different activities taking place on the streets. This was their way of having a sense of freedom without showing their faces.
San Antonio Historic Sites and Museums
November 17th, 2009
If your vacation plans, or even a business trip takes you to San Antonio, Texas, be assured there is plenty to do while you are there. One of the many fascinating things to experience is the Annual San Antonio River Walk. Of course your timing has to be right, so be sure and check with the local Chamber of Commerce for the exact dates if this is something you would be interested in. Once a year, for regular maintenance purposes, the city drains the San Antonio River and it becomes a bustling area for many activities. The idea first originated as a means of flood control and has become a major part of San Antonio today. The drained area is two miles long but extensive plans are underway that will turn the walk into a 13-mile stretch, connecting museums, unique shops and historic areas. The walk is one mile below street level at this time and offers many sites and activities for all ages.
And of course the Alamo is absolutely a must see on your agenda. This historic shrine, known the world over, represents Texas Liberty where the defenders paid the ultimate price for freedom. Two of the most famous of these defenders were Davy Crockett and Jim Bowie. I daresay you will be moved as you stand on this hallowed ground where this historic battle took place and ponder the deep meaning of the sacrifices for freedom.
Museums are always high on visitors lists and San Antonio offers many, such as Ripley’s Believe It or Not Museum, The Buckhorn Saloon and Museum, and the Witt Museum. The San Antonio Zoo is another must visit site. While here, you will have many luxury San Antonio hotels to select from, the perfect start and finish to your fun filled days. This fascinating city has it all. Go and enjoy.
What Makes a Great Business Leader?
November 16th, 2009
One of the first steps, and the first lessons in many leadership training programs, is good common sense. However, it is amazing just how uncommon common sense is to find in some of the leaders of the corporate world today. In order to deal with managerial issues, a person must first be able to recognize those issues when they occur. Problems may occur just simply because they were not considered before.
A great leader will pause, and ask questions of themselves before proceeding on with actions. A great manager also accomplishes what is expected of them. Mistakes will be made, surely, but mistakes are to be learned from, and you move on continuing with the job that you are intended to perform. When you take the lead, you suddenly become solely responsible for your own work, as well as the work of your team. This is not meant to be daunting, but is meant to instill the fact that you are now in a position to actually change the way things work.
Through corporate training you will gain authority that could have quite and impact on the way that staff members work, in the entire business environment of your company. Larger companies may restrict some of this freedom, sticking rigidly to corporate ideology, however there is still much that a great leader can do to improve the lives, the productivity and the efficiency of the people in their department.
It is easier to work within existing systems that to fight those systems, as any management training program will reinforce. Smaller companies may allow more opportunities for innovative and creative thinking. Each department will directly affect the company, and this will be noticed. Success gains approval, and approval reinforces people. This is a win-win situation, and is something that every business leader strives to achieve.
Goa Will Make You Become a Beach Bum
November 16th, 2009
Happy New Year to all! I don’t know where to begin…we arrived in Panjim about a week ago at 5am. Hail a taxi to take me to my hotel and this very likable taxi driver took full advantage of my sleep deprivation and charged me double the fare, I figured this was my welcome mat to Goa.
I stayed at one of the best four star hotels Goa offers and my jet-lag caught up with me so I proceeded to sleep first instead of taking a look around. When I awoke it was night time, and my first night in the city, adjusting to the very casual, laid-back atmosphere of Goa made it possible for me to fall in love with it. I just came from the very conservative Northern parts of India for about 2 months, so experiencing this less restrictive, and more relaxing vibe, made me chill my attitude and go with the flow.
I travelled to Anjuna a found out it’s very much like the clubbing atmosphere of Ibiza. There were mostly Europeans here and they were on a hedonistic rampage of raving it till they drop. Anjuna definitely took a step outside of India, this was not India. It was Christmas Eve and I ended up on Anjuna’s beach, party really and I learned very quickly how to negotiate my way through all the food hawkers and market vendors. They were hard to ignore, with all the yelling at you they do, but I became very numb to it, and that seemed to work.
I headed back to Margao, which is the capital city of South Goa. I decided to check out the beaches by my hotel and the beach is so tropical and beautiful. It was quite compared to Anjuna and much more affordable. I think I’ll find out the prices of renting a bungalow and become a Goa beach bum.
New Years Eve, I spent at the fiesta my hotel threw for all its guests. I was dancing with the Goan trance and Indie pop. When the party started getting to drunken, I walked out to the white sands and clear night sky with a fresh pineapple and coconut milk drink, when I bumped into this big pink (sunburned) bodybuilder. We hit it off right away for some reason, maybe because he doesn’t drink either, or maybe it was his pathetic sunburn. Either way, it made my New Year be a lot better.
Hot Tub is Perfect For Individual Households
November 3rd, 2009
Jesse had waited long enough. He had been wanting to purchase a hot tub for years though it always seemed he was in some kind of transition and that the time was never right. He had been trying to sell his house for a couple of years and only recently moved into the small two bedroom home that he believes he will be happy in for years to come. Jesse has no plans to get married and have children. He is a lawyer who is relatively new to his career, though his future looks promising and he is already stable and with a good firm. He sees his work as being his priority for quite a few years and the demanding hours mean that he spends little time at home.
Jesse wanted a simple house with a small yard. He could remodel it according to his specific tastes and it would be his own little castle, while he was there. Meanwhile, though he was not home often, he validated his decision to purchase a hot tub based on some information he had read about the stress relieving qualities of a therapeutic soak in a hot tub. Not only did it seem to make sound sense to purchase one, but he was also attracted to the idea of coming home later after a long day at work and relaxing in the tub with a nice pint of Guinness or maybe a Boddinton’s Pub Ale.
Jesse contacted choosehottubsdirect.com and was impressed with the speed in which they responded to his inquiry and also the amount of information they offered. At the same time he was stunned to discover the amount of models and various styles of hot tubs that were available. He had a decades old images of an old wooden tub in his head and was utterly fascinated at far the hot tub technology has come. Jesse decided he needed to take a little time before making his final decision but eventually knew exactly what he wanted. He now has a nice comfortable tub with massage features and great stereo system and also a slightly romantic lighting system. While Jesse has no intentions of marrying anytime soon, he does enjoy entertaining special people now and then.
